Automated Drilling

Automated Drilling System

While Employed with Rigminder I undertook the very ambitious project of converting and compiling a major operators intellectual property to a usable and marketable product. The system was designed to bring in a drilling directive from engineering software(Also Rigminder Developed) and the Automated process would execute the commands given. This created a system that would drill a well according to plan with little interface from the driller.

System Hardware

In this system I utilized the Beckhoff CPU and HMI touch screen with Indusoft HMI Software. Utilized this hardware to allow for several options of integrating with multiple communication Protocols. In addition to allow for programming expansion. The Beckhoff TwinCat 3 software is an Add-On to Microsoft Visual Studio. This would allow for expansion to other programing languages.

System Operational information

The system was designed to automate the drilling process according to a drilling plan. The system would automatically return to bottom in a controlled and repeatable manner to help alleviate damage to downhole equipment. When the system would receive a directive to commence directional work, we would automatically transition operations and begin directional control work.

System Enhancements

The overall outcome was to enhance the drilling process for repeatable results. This would include efficiency, smoother equipment operation, less wear and tear on downhole equipment, and automatic recoveries from dysfunctions.

Conclusions: it was an absolute pleasure to manage this project. We were able to realize huge gains while implementing system improvements to allow for the future of oilfield equipment operation. I have learned a lot in how what happens on the surface and how it reflects down hole and vice versa. Massive efficiencies can be gained with continued growth and synergies between the two. Overall I enjoyed the opportunity to work on this product and look forward to continued advancements.
